Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is here — the franchise's most beloved entry, reborn from the ground up for modern hardware. Thirteen years after the legendary Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag captured hearts as one of the greatest open-world pirate adventures ever made, Ubisoft has delivered what fans have demanded for over a decade: a complete, faithful remake built in the latest version of the Anvil Engine — the same engine that powered Assassin's Creed Shadows — with rebuilt visuals, modernized gameplay, new story content, and stunning technical enhancements including ray tracing, Dolby Atmos, and a revolutionary water system.

This is not a remaster. Every environment, character model, animation, and system has been rebuilt from scratch to deliver the definitive version of Edward Kenway's legendary story — while remaining scrupulously faithful to everything that made the original a masterpiece. Reviews confirm the approach has paid off: Metacritic scores of 84–85 and an OpenCritic score of 86–88 with 94% of critics recommending the game — placing it comfortably in the top 10 best-reviewed games of 2026 and the highest-rated Assassin's Creed game since the original Black Flag itself.

Game Director Richard Knight described the team's philosophy clearly: "a faithful and rich experience, grounded in what players love" about the original — not a genre reinvention, but a perfection. This is Black Flag as it was always meant to be experienced: richer, deeper, more beautiful, and with brand-new content that expands Edward's adventure in ways the 2013 version never could.

The Story – Born a Pirate, Forged as an Assassin

Edward Kenway is not your typical Assassin's Creed hero. He is not driven by ideology, brotherhood, or ancient conspiracy — at least, not at first. A Welsh privateer-turned-pirate from humble Bristol origins, Edward is pragmatic, charismatic, and dangerously talented — a man who wants fortune and freedom above all else, and who stumbles into the world-spanning conflict between Assassins and Templars almost by accident.

Set in the Caribbean during the 1710s–1720s at the height of the Golden Age of Piracy, Black Flag Resynced places Edward at the center of a thrilling adventure spanning sun-soaked tropical islands, treacherous open waters, bustling colonial cities, and the legendary pirate republic of Nassau. Alongside real historical figures — Blackbeard (Edward Thatch), the terrifying pirate legend; Anne Bonny, the fiercest woman on the high seas; Charles Vane, the ruthless captain who bows to no authority — Edward carves his own path through a world of treasure, betrayal, and mythology.

The remake introduces new story content written by the original game's lead writer, Darby McDevitt — including a powerful new scene between Edward and his wife Caroline, a thread of the story that was always emotionally potent but underexplored in the original. Supporting characters like Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet receive expanded arcs that deepen their roles in ways the 2013 version only hinted at, and three entirely new officer characters — Lucy Baldwin, The Padre, and Tobias "Deadman" Smith — bring fresh missions, unique Jackdaw abilities, and their own recruitment stories to the adventure.

Matt Ryan — the original voice and performance capture actor for Edward Kenway — reprises his role for all new content, ensuring the character's voice and personality are perfectly consistent with the version fans fell in love with in 2013.

A World Without Gold — Brand New Chapter

One of the most exciting additions to Black Flag Resynced is "A World Without Gold" — a complete new chapter consisting of eight new missions not present in the original game.

Becoming available immediately after completing Sequence 11, "A World Without Gold" centers on tracking down the mysterious figure Maynard and provides an entirely new storyline that expands Edward's adventure before the game's final act. The chapter features new characters — including Rhona Dinsmore, Upton Travers, and Opia Apito — and delivers new environments, new narrative beats, and a deeper exploration of the Caribbean's hidden histories.

Key Features

Rebuilt from the Ground Up — Anvil Engine at Full Power

  • Every aspect of the game has been reconstructed in the latest version of Ubisoft's Anvil Engine — the most advanced iteration of the technology, delivering more detailed character faces, richer animations, denser crowds, and more vibrant, expansive environments across land, sea, and beneath the waves

  • Ray-Traced Global Illumination (RTGI) enabled in every graphics mode on PS5 and PS5 Pro — no compromises, full ray tracing at all times

  • Fully dynamic lighting system powered by hardware-accelerated ray tracing delivers real-time shadows and atmospheric lighting that makes every sunset over the Caribbean, every moonlit raid, and every storm-lit naval battle feel physically real

  • Dolby Atmos spatial audio support for immersive three-dimensional sound — waves against the hull, cannon fire rolling across open water, the creak of rigging in the wind, all spatially anchored and breathtakingly real

The Most Spectacular Water Ever Seen in a Game

  • The Anvil watertech team rebuilt the game's water system from scratch specifically for Black Flag Resynced — their finest achievement yet

  • Fully modernized physically based rendering pipeline for water surfaces, combined with a new tessellation technique, volumetric foam generation, and a dynamic bubble system that adds extraordinary surface detail to everything from gentle island shallows to heaving storm swells

  • The dynamic weather system directly affects how the Jackdaw handles at sea — storms create real sailing challenges, requiring active management of sails and heading in a way that makes every voyage feel like a genuine nautical experience

  • Dive beneath the surface into fully rendered underwater environments — sunken shipwrecks, coral reefs, schools of fish, and hidden treasures in a Caribbean underworld as beautiful as any above-water environment

Seamless Open World — No Loading Screens

  • The entire Caribbean world of Black Flag Resynced is a seamless, loading-screen-free environment — sail from Nassau to Havana to Kingston without ever seeing a loading screen, and step off the Jackdaw onto any island with complete freedom

  • Discover a rich open world of over 50 locations including the iconic cities of Nassau, Havana, and Kingston, plus dozens of unnamed islands, cays, reefs, and hidden coves across the Leonida-era Caribbean

  • Dive anywhere — approach any stretch of coastline or open water and dive in, with full underwater swimming available throughout the open world, not limited to specific dive spots

Rebuilt Combat — Fluid, Dynamic, and Spectacular

  • Combat has been completely rethought: faster, more fluid, and designed around perfect parries, combo chains, and chained takedowns of up to four enemies in sequence — the best close-quarters combat system in the franchise

  • A new defense mechanic adds tactical depth to encounters without introducing RPG complexity — health and defense bars are present but entirely optional via HUD customization, keeping the experience true to its action-adventure roots

  • No levels, no gear scores, no progression gates — confirmed by Ubisoft: Black Flag Resynced is "a pure, story-driven adventure" and not an RPG, maintaining the original's classic action-adventure design philosophy

  • Additional destructible environment elements make every encounter more visceral — walls shatter, barrels explode, and the environments themselves become weapons

Enhanced Parkour — More Agile than Ever

  • Edward Kenway's parkour system has been brought fully up to modern AC standards: smoother transitions, tighter movement feel, and new abilities including triple jumps, back ejects, and side ejects that enable more creative, expressive traversal

  • Classic Edward Kenway animations are fully preserved — this is the same Captain, moving with greater fluidity and fewer limitations

Enriched Stealth — Hunt Without Consequence

  • Free crouch — move stealthily at any time, at full speed, without awkward stance transitions

  • Tailing and eavesdropping missions redesigned — being discovered no longer causes an instant mission failure/desync. Instead, the target reacts to your presence and you must adapt to salvage the mission — turning stealth failures into tense improvisation scenarios rather than frustrating restarts

  • Enhanced stealth toolset with more tactical options throughout all environments

Expanded Naval Combat — The Jackdaw Reborn

  • The Jackdaw — Edward's legendary brig — returns fully upgraded with new alternate fire modes for every weapon type, expanded upgrade paths, and cosmetic customization options including new sail sets, hull trims, figureheads, crew attire, and ship's pets

  • The Hideout at Great Inagua has been expanded with an upgradeable building system — invest in the General Store, Tavern, and Guesthouse to unlock new upgrade tiers for the Jackdaw and new perks for Edward

  • Three new officers — Lucy Baldwin, The Padre, and Tobias "Deadman" Smith — each bring unique Jackdaw combat abilities. Deadman, for example, allows firing broadside cannons twice before reloading — dramatically changing the dynamics of naval engagements

  • Recruit a cat or monkey as a ship's pet — one of Black Flag Resynced's most charming new quality-of-life additions

Fully Customizable Difficulty System

  • For the first time in the franchise, players can independently adjust four separate difficulty categories: Combat, Naval Combat, Stealth, and Activities (hunting, harpoon fishing, etc.)

  • Three tiers per category: Forgiving (Story), Intended (Normal), and Hard — creating hundreds of possible difficulty combinations tailored to each player's preferences and strengths

New Soundtrack by Woodkid

  • French musician and Assassin's Creed fan Woodkid contributes original music tracks to Black Flag Resynced, expanding the game's already legendary soundtrack with new compositions that honor the spirit of the original

  • New sea shanties join the classic collection — including a brand new shanty whose sheet music is included as a physical collectible in the Collector's Edition

Photo Mode and Full HUD Customization

  • A fully featured Photo Mode allows players to capture the Caribbean's extraordinary beauty at any moment

  • The UI is completely customizable with Simple, Minimal, and No HUD presets — or individually toggle every element for a perfectly personalized experience

PS5 Pro Enhanced

  • PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) — the latest version of Sony's reconstruction technology — delivers improved image quality and a reduced visual gap between performance and fidelity modes

  • 60 FPS options in both Performance and Quality modes on PS5 and PS5 Pro

  • DualSense adaptive triggers and haptic feedback — feel the tension of a drawn crossbow, the vibration of cannon recoil, and the sway of the Jackdaw in rough seas
